Paint Correction

What is Paint Correction?

Paint correction is a meticulous process aimed at restoring and rejuvenating the exterior paintwork of a vehicle. It involves the careful removal of imperfections such as swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and other blemishes that may have accumulated over time. Paint correction is performed by utilizing specialized tools, compounds, and techniques to gently abrade the clear coat, gradually leveling the surface to achieve a smooth and flawless finish. This intensive procedure not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the car but also revitalizes the paint, restoring its depth, clarity, and brilliance. The result is a showroom-quality shine that transforms the appearance of the vehicle, making it look as good as, and sometimes bettern than, new.

What does Paint Correction fix?

The level of restoration with paint correction is dependent on the level of effort put into the process.  There are four types of paint correction from basic to extremely time and skill intensive.

One Step Paint Correction

The single step paint correction involves using a combined cut and polish with a semi-abrasive pad  This process will remove up to 50% of paint imperfections.

Two Step Paint Correction

A double step paint correction involves using a cutting agent or rubbing compound with an abrasive pad followed with a fine polish and a finishing pad.  This process is much more intensive and will remove up to 80% of swirl marks paint imperfections.

Three Step Paint Correction

A triple step paint correction involves the use of a strong compound with a heavy cut pad.  This process requires skill and experience and will ruin a cars clear coat finish if done incorrectly.  After the abrasive cut a medium compound and medium cut pad is used over the surface.  Once this is complete a fine polish is used with a fine cut/finishing pad.  This is the most intensive process and will correct up to 99% of swirls, abrasions, fine scratches, and paint imperfections.

Four Step Paint Correction

A quadruple step paint correction takes the three step paint correction to the next level by starting with wet sanding.  Wet sanding a vehicle involves the use of fine-grit sandpaper and water to gently remove imperfections from the paint surface, such as orange peel texture or deep scratches.  As with using a heavy cutting agent, this process will ruin a cars clear coat if not done properly.  After the wet sanding is complete a three step paint correction is completed.  This process will not only remove up to 100% of paint imperfections but can also remove deep scratches from the surface.

What is needed for Paint Correction?

To complete the paint correction process you will need a dual action rotary polisher, polishes, compounds, and high quality polishing pads.

Polisher

When choosing a polisher you want to look for both quality and technology.  A good polisher uses a random action with pressure sensitivity.  This action ensure there is no burn on the paint will making the job smoother and easier.  Argus recommends Rupes or Flex brand polishers.  It is best to get a large polisher for big surface areas and a smaller polisher for harder to reach and smaller spots.

Polishing Pads

Polishing pads are required for the polisher to work and will need to be replaced over time with use.  Just like a piece of sandpaper these polishing pads will wear out over time.  Choose the right level of cut based on how many steps of paint correction you are completing.  Match the polishing pads to your polisher.  Argus recommends Rupes polishing and cutting pads.

Cutting Compound and Polish

Cutting compounds and polishes are automotive detailing products designed to remove imperfections, such as scratches and swirl marks, from a vehicle’s paint surface; cutting compounds are more abrasive and tackle deeper flaws, while polishes refine and enhance the paint, leaving a smooth and glossy finish.  Argus recommends Rupes or Koch Chemie compounds and polishes.
